Het maakt eigenlijk niet uit hoe goed je jouw bestanden georganiseerd hebt, op een gegeven ogenblik zul je tegen de vraag aan gelopen zijn “moet ik dat bestand nu in deze map of in die andere plaatsen?”…”en zal ik daarna niet vergeten dat ik de bestanden daar geplaatst hebt?”…”of zal ik alleen maar een kopietje maken?”. Met Tabbles zal je daar geen last meer van hebben!
Tabbles biedt je de mogelijkheid om jouw bestanden/mappen te categoriseren door ze te plaatsen in een tabble (tag-bubbles) en waardoor je deze terug kunt vinden door te onthouden waar het bestand mee te maken had en combinatie van de tabbles (tabble = concept) die je doen denken aan dat bestand, op een natuurlijke en dynamische wijze. De bestanden worden NIET verplaatst, gedupliceerd of mee geknoeid. Bijv., met Tabbles kun je alle “Afbeeldingen” terugvinden waarop je “Kinderen” in de “Bergen” te zien zijn met 4 KLIKKEN
Belangrijkste features:
- Een tabble (de gekleurde bubble) is een TAG en tegelijkertijd een VIRTUELE MAP: met de mogelijkheid van drag&drop (als bij mappen) om er later als een tag naar te bladeren.
- Hetzelfde bestand kan in meerdere tabbles geplaatst worden ZONDER DAT HET WORDT GEDUPLICEERD op je harde schijf.

I hate MS's evolution to 'smoke and mirrors'.
I hate the Documents and Settings folder.
It is like a mineshaft dug by a giant rabid Wombat.
And I hate the pretend folders in Windows Explorer 'My Pictures' etc.
Which in fact are like shortcuts to 6 miles down the mineshaft of 'Documents and Settings'
I believe Windows 7 is adding more of this abstracting for Files and Folders.
Join me to fight this.
(I am NOT referring to this GOTD program, I am referring to the evolving concept of abstracting us away from where files are actually located.)
Instead, create folders in your C drive like -
C:\B_
Under there, you can have folders for Money, Web, CD-DVD, Health, etc
C:\D_\CD-DVD\
C:\D_\Health\
C:\B_\Money\
C:\D_\Web\
And then you can have sub folders under them.
Doing that means you will always know where to find things, without any 'pretend this is a folder' rubbish.
And you can burn the lot to a DVD Weekly or Daily, to back it all up.
In addition, change the Settings in all your programs, to prevent them saving things into the mineshaft (where you may have to search to find them).
Instead have a folder called
C:\Downloads\
And save everything into there.
Get a multi tabbed Windows Explorer like XYPlorerFree, and lock the first Tab to the Downloads folder.
You can have that Tab set to sort by Date, and you can lock that preference.
Then every so often, you can go to that tab, and move your files to the C:\B_\ sub folders.
Not only will the most recent be at the top (of your Downloads folder, Tab), but the adjacent ones will relate to the same download session.

I've been visiting GOTD for many months now (thanks to Rick Broida at The Cheapskate blog at CNET) and have not really commented.
1) @Noel--What I've read previously is that many people are using the thumbs-up or down on the basis of whether or not they think they might like it and might or might not download it. Apparently many folks who see the product and decide that it is not useful for them simply click on a thumbs down.
2) I haven't tried this yet, but am definitely going to. My wife and I have differing ideas about how to label photos especially and I think a product like this will make it easier. Heck, I'm likely to try this on my work computer because I often can't remember what "category" I put something in. The ability to tag files with multiple entries is a great idea (maybe too time-consuming, but that's to be seen).
3) I don't think it's a great idea to gripe about the .net framework as a primary reason not to use the product. I suppose the developer might have used a different method (I'm not especially technically savvy in software design), but complaining about the use of the time it take to download the technology isn't especially fair. I don't think most folks complain too much that they have to use a browser to open a web site. (I know, this is a bit naive a viewpoint, but the developer's just using the tools available, right?)
4) I love that Ashraf does really nice reviews of products and I especially love how he rates the cost too. Much appreciated advice and thanks for your efforts.
5) I recommendation to GOTD would be to either:
a) Put on today's page way to vote on yesterday's giveaway so folks can have time with it before voting.
b) Generate an e-mail the next day to vote on previous day's giveaway.
c) Create a longer history page of past giveaways that would both give users the chance to vote as much as 30 days after the release, give vendors the opportunity to continue to market their product, possibly give vendors the opportunity to offer a download for a small cost (e.g., $5/download) that might even have $1 of that captured by GOTD for running this great website. The 24-hour time limit makes sense, but I've missed some giveaways that I saw while at work that I forgot to download at home (the Ashampoo house design software to be specific) that I might have been willing to pay a little something for.
Thanks GOTD for your site. I find it totally addictive to visit each day and enjoy exploring even when the product isn't of particular interest to me.
I have been using Tabbles since it began. Most of the posters here at GOTD have missed the MAJOR functional capability.
A major failing of any real file system is the inability to have virtual directories.
A given file, like contactGeorge.txt needs to be located in multiple LOGICAL folders.

\projects\company\theABC\people\george
I would like to be able to "find" george any way I want by using logical folders or naming but have all of these techniques point to the same PHYSICAL file.
It is not unusal for "find" or "search" to be used VERY often.
Another example:pictures
The same picture could be found in:
\Family gatherings 2010 July
\Son graduation
\Son's school years
A given picture could be in each of these virtual folders but only physically exist in one place
Tabbles is not the perfect system, the user interface and rules take some time to learn and implement.
Tabbles is the PERFECT SOLUTION that needs more users to comment on improvement requirements.
The Tabbles team is VERY responsive.
They are the only solution on the horizon for this very expensive problem.
This lack of multiple names(aliases) has been around since my first Mainframe days in the 1960's.
The volume of data storage available today is still amazing.
I only buy 2TB drives and have many of them. (A lot of backup)
A methodology like Tabbles is the only technique to organize your contents based on YOUR requirements not the Microsoft file system.
I am NOT an employee of Tabbles, just a big fan that has been involved in managing large volumes of data storage since the 1960's.
I was the manager responsible for the "futures of Data Storage management" in the 1980's - wow has it been that long?
To bad Tabbles is not available for the Mainframe...
I urge you to give this program a try. Space, .net, memory issues are trivival compared to the real probmel of managing files.

Die checkmate/sjekmeet (hoe origineel) was niet altijd een slijmerig watje hoor!
Er was een tijd dat hij zich voordeed als de RAMBO van de NL en een geweldig getraind super geval was. Hij was (volgens eigen zeggen) getraind en opgewassen tegen werkelijk ieder verbaal en fysiek geweld!
Hier op GAOTD moest vooral Brillie en vele andere goedwillende personen het ontgelden met zijn "geweldige" kijk/visie op zaken. (want lachen dat hij altijd deed met z'n collega's, in z'n ééntje dus)
Helaas hebben de NL bestuurders ooit eens bedacht goedkope lieden in dienst te nemen. Lieden die dus nooit verder zijn gekomen dan de lagere kleuterschool (vandaar dat ondoorzichtige taalgebruik en het feit dat er geen zin zonder taalvaut wordt geschreiven).
Wat de reden is dat hij een tijdje terug plots 180 graden omdraaide... ik wiet neette, maar het onderste gedeelte van m'n bek rust nog steeds op de plavuizen hier. Maar goed.. van mij mag hij op de huidige manier gewoon doorgaan hoor al heeft het geen enkele toegevoegde waarde, zoals gewoonlijk.

Helaas moet ik deze GOTD missen (kan niet activeren want ben vannavond niet thuis en hier kan ik niet installeren want dit is niet mijn pc).
De vorige Tabbles heb ik thuis wel in gebruik, maar deze kan wel wat meer met die auto-tag-rules. Al mijn foto's heb ik er natuurlijk nooit in gekregen, maar ik kan er heel handig een aantal leuke mee terug vinden. Blijft een mooi produkt in mijn ogen.

Ik gaf het ook alleen maar als voorbeeld van een programma dat ongeveer dezelfde mate van inzet van de gebruiker verlangt.
Ik snap dat Tabbles anders werkt, heb het de vorige keer geïnstalleerd en daar is het bij gebleven.
Met Folder Marker ging het bijna net zo, tot ik het rechtsklikken ontdekte.

@44: ik bedoel te zeggen bij foldermarker zou elke Tabble een folder moeten worden, wat dan ook nog tot gevolg heeft dat je foto's moet dupliceren om in al die folders te passen. Tabbles slaat copien van filespec op in een db met Tabbles, maar geen duplicaten van de foto's.

@fotoflex: zo als jij het wilt gebruiken heb je gelijk, visuele markering van folders, maar Tabbles biedt een mogelijkheid die foldermarker niet heeft: zoeken op taggs waardoor je individuele files kunt vinden.
Voorb: foto's van de hond terwijl hij door een hoepel springt.
Tabbles vindt zo'n foto terug, Foldermarker alleen als je betreffende foto's in een eigen folder stopt (met kleurmarkering).

That way I don't need to have the program running and that makes all the difference!
Of course, it's not the same program as yours, but requires the same level of the user's attention.

The "service in background" @39 could be very small, just catching right-click from explorer. Yes it would have to start (this will cost) Tabbles or part of it to fetch the defined Tabbles.
In my eyes not too big a task to produce ...
but as I already stated @36 "this will only work when there is a big difference in size and load between this new small app. that will be started while right-clicking and the full Tabbles app. I do not bear any insight in that matter, but I do like kippensoeps suggestion if this could be true." so I do take your word for that as a fact that it would be almost impossible task to accomplish.
And I agree again that the presetting and finishing algorithm would have to be build from scratch.
Still wonderiing what kind of integration you were referring to.
The auto-tagging-rules are a nice feature though but ...
For me, one of the most valuable properties of Tabbles is that it works without doing anything with the preexisting file/folder-structure or demanding anything special from it (structureconservating).
From the videos it seems to me that in order to use auto-tagging-rules this (structureconservating) is no longer true. You have to setup special folders connected with Tabbles in order to drop new files in that folder to get it tagged accordingly or use exsisting folders in a special way to collect the files that have to be auto-tagged.
Still a nice feature though, but with limitations for me, as my file/folder structure means the world to me and I'm not allowing anything to change this in a way that I don't want (not because an app wants me to, to use a special feuature).
I do have a question though:
Does a file placed in a auto-tagging-folder still have the tags when I remove it again from that folder? I mean, the location of the file changes, but do the Tabbles stay?

@ @^@: you're talking about a service running in background: this would be veeeeeeery difficult from us to implement, very close to rewriting the whole thing from scratch.
But I also have another point: the auto-tagging rules, please have a look at the last 2 videos on our video page (and the "one-click tagging" video):

What I'm saying is that in reality most of the tagging is done via auto-tagging rules and one-click tagging... if you try this out you'll realise that your problem becomes much smaller.
And yes, you'd need to have Tabbles always running :-)

Toch moet ik zeggen dat sjekmeet (ik zal me dan zolang het nodig is maar aanpassen aan deze nieuwe spelling) met zijn stijl van schrijven geslaagd is een handtekening of echtheidskenmerk te zetten onder zijn werk. Een handtekening die onderscheidbaar is en niet na te maken.
Soms is pure poezie ook moeilijk te volgen of zelfs moeilijk te waarderen (laat staan te maken), maar de stijl van sjekmeet is rijk aan associaties, combinaties en contaminaties en wordt daardoor wel heel bloemrijk. In ieder geval een ware, waarachtige en onvervreemdbare kunst.
Ondertussen, met het gewend raken daaraan, kan ik daar wel een zekere waardering voor hebben (it has to grow on you), daarvoor hoef je het niet eens altijd inhoudelijk eens te zijn.
Als hij in de ban gedaan is (geen idee) zal daar wel een reden voor zijn die mogelijk gelegen is in het door jou genoemde "wolf in schaapskleren" inhoudelijke deel van zijn schrijven, wie zal het zeggen; ik niet want weet niet.
Vanuit mijn gezichtspunt wil ik toch ook de 'fantastisch poëet' in hem zien als het gaat om zijn stijl. Grote literaire namen als Jan Wolkers of Mensje van Keulen waren ook niet altijd zo fijnzinnig om plastiche beeldvorming enigszins te omvloersen, maar het stond erkenning niet in de weg.
Over 50 jaar zijn de geschriften van sjekmeet verplichte literatuur, let maar eens op en als hij in de ban is worden zijn geschriften alleen maar meer waard (want zeldzamer), de geschriften uit zijn ballingschapsperiode (zoiets als de blauwe periode van Picasso, hier met de zgn. sjekmeet-stijl), onthoud dat goed.
Nou verbaas ik misschien omdat ík dat zeg, maar ik deed het toch ;)

I do second "Kippensoep" (I do like the way Italians write this kind of food as "Kikkensoap", like 'a soap to kick around' in English ;) )
wholeheartedly in this hint. This is why:
Suppose you are browsing a large collection of files and did not start a Tabbles collection from the start of collecting these files (a situation very common to most of us I suppose).
Suddenly you run into some files you would like to have Tabbled (you may have started to have some files Tabbled already to have some extra searchpower in finding back the important ones).
Now you have to start Tabbles (full app.) first (I will not leave it on all the time) and add them to the Tabbles of choice. It consumes time and effort that could easily scare me of doing so, makng me think to do this later and probably forget about it.
Ricght clicking from explorer to add the files to Tabbles makes it possible to open a smaller application with a dropdown/checklist of all possible Tabbles defined (perhapse choose the right database first) and presets the Tabble/file connection.
Next time Tabbles is started, the presets can be incorperated in the real Tabbles-app.
In this way you do not have to open Tables, but automatically finish adding the files next time Tabbles is started (perhapse there will be need -pop-up- to supply some parameters first), all very light and effordless.
Offcourse this will only work when there is a big difference in size and load between this new small app. that will be started while right-clicking and the full Tabbles app. I do not bear any insight in that matter, but I do like kippensoeps suggestion if this could be true.
It'll all depend on how much code will have to be run to make the presets and how much code can be delayed till the real app. has started to finish adding the files to Tabbles.
Building a Tabbles-db from scratch is a lot af work when you have many files to be catalogued (#files times #properties).
Kippensoeps suggestion will make it easier to have the db grow from time to time a bit.
Of course when you start collecting and also start Tabbling at the same moment, this is of reduced impotance.

A couple of quick answers:
- more integration with windows explorer would be possbile, but not sure it's worth it.
- Marketing: we're not looking at the home marketing, we're mainly interesting in people producing files/documents cause they have a real problem in managing file.

10 @ 19: Checkmate schrijft niet altijd doorzichtig, maar ik meen dat hijzelf ooit te kennen gaf dat hij was "gebanned". Het is nauwelijks voor te stellen van iemand die altijd zo aangenaam en respectvol met de medeposters omgaat.
Het is net als met slimpie/robert/freek willem, die ook steeds een ander schaapsvacht over zijn eigen wolvenvel heentrok. Er verandert heus niets!

Manual:

-It is not neccessary to explain why tabbles is quicker compared to the usual way of indexing files. Leave the marketing out of a manual.
-The "how to" basis in the subtitles is ok, but please follow through and explain how to use the functions, like combining searches. The manual just won´t tell, it is merely explaining concepts, not explaining what to do.
b.t.w. The manual seems easy, but it is extremely difficult to get a grasp of how things are done, what to click, where to click etc.
Program:
- Lessen the options, make it simpler (lite version?), e.g. provide presets, divided in what the consumer wants Tabbles to handle (documents, photo´s, etc.), like, with photo´s, "family", "vacation", "projects", e.g. Lots of people divide their pictures in the same way, why let them try to invent the wheel again? The option to make extra bubbles is always there.
-Is it not possible to integrate into windows explorer, ideally it could work like right-clicking on a file, see the bubbles, and marking an X for everything the file is relating to.
- Please try not to use the newest versions of .Net framework that people will have to download.
Marketing
- To most people, the value of this program is not very high, not more than a nice utility to save some time. This program is not easy to set up and use, people have to think a lot how to differentiate between files, and create a set of bubbles accordingly. Perhaps they will have a go at the manual, but the manual will put them off: they would want to know what to click and where, not an explanation why tabbles operates the way it does.

Als je heel veel artikelen, foto's etc hebt is het achteraf ordenen een crime natuurlijk. Als je net iets begint op te zetten kan het goed. Een knipselarchief is een goed voorbeeld.
-artikeltje uitknippen en opplakken op een multomap-pagina en in multomap doen.
-pagina van nummer voor zien.
-tekstbestandje met nummer in de naam voorzien van korte toelichting.
-eigenschappen die je van belang vindt definieren in Tabbles.
-tekstbestandje toekennen aan tabbles.
Is te doen.
Maar in mijn geval waarbij ik 2 grote harde schijven vol fotomateriaal heb is het net als bij jou en Ootje achteraf niet te doen volledig te zijn.
Wat wel kan is een groei-project.
Iedere keer dat je iets zoekt, tegenkomt dat je zou willen onthouden, even aan tabbles toevoegen.
je bent dan niet volledig (nog lang niet), maar de opmerkelijkste zaken vind je dan wel snel terug, plus het wordt steeds beter.
Daarnaast kun je natuurlijk altijd terug vallen op hoe je het nu ook doet.

@Ootje: klopt helemaal! Ik was te vlug en heb er me te snel van afgemaakt. Toen ik alles nog eens goed bekeek, leek het plots weer interessant. Maar... ik vrees dat ik nooit die consequentie kan opbrengen van alles een kenmerk te geven. Beetje twijfelgeval dus!

Dit lijkt een handig concept. Dingen vinden naar de relaties die ermee zijn.
De 250+ mb .NET download met Microsoft programmeerwerk is niet bepaald vertrouwen wekkend, en dan de gedachte dat een op microsoft programmeerwerk gestoeld programma maximaal 10.000 programma´s moet bijhouden... en dan een database bij moet houden van het aantal bubbles tot de macht hetzelfde aantal bubbles... en dan maal het aantal bestanden wat ingedeeld is op relaties. Dit moet op een gegeven moment wel fout gaan.
Zelfstandig .net 4.0 installatieprogramma installeren gaat overigens veel sneller, onderaan de pagina. Opnieuw rebooten. Vervolgens het Windows installation package 4.0, alweer opnieuw rebooten.
Blijft hangen in "Preparing to install". Gecancelt, opnieuw uitgevoerd. Geinstalleerd, duurde 15 minuten.
Het maken van een paar bubbles gaat gemakkelijk, maar dan de handleiding... Zucht.... h t t p://www.tabbles.net/wiki/index.php?title=Tabbles_Manual_(EN) Waarom hebben ze de puntsgewijze indeling bovenaan niet laten terugkomen in het verhaal eronder? En waarom staat er onder combinations niet hoe je een gecombineerde zoekopdracht uitvoert? Als dit programma het makkelijker moet maken, waarom het bij de handleiding zo moeilijk maken.
Ik denk dat de meeste consumenten veel foto´s op hun computer hebben staan, en het programma daarvoor denken te gebruiken. Maar... bijv. Picasa is daarvoor voldoende denk ik. De datum (tijdlijn) & de mapnamen & de bestandsnamen, als je ze even handig bedenkt, zijn voor de meeste mensen voldoende.
Dit programma had zo uitgevoerd kunnen worden dat het erg handig is, met een leuke interface, De meeste mensen zullen de verdiensten van dit product "sneller vinden van bestanden" niet hoger waarderen dan een leuke utility, maar daar zeker geen honderden mb´s, een tragere computer, het doorworstelen van een onoverzichtelijke ellenlange handleiding en een extra op de achtergrond draaiend programma voor over hebben.

Als ik de werking van het programma begrijp, wordt er NIETS veranderd aan de bestaande plaats van je bestanden: alles blijft staan waar het staat.
ENKEL: extra, je krijgt een soort catalogus/index erbij, die bij houdt waar alle bestanden staan en welk kenmerk(en) je eraan hebt gegeven.
BV: een vakantiefoto 2009 in Zuid-Frankrijk, in de zon, met Jan, Piet, Maria en Helene, aan het strand.
Die sla je op de gewone normale manier op, en met Tabbles kun je er 9 kenmerken aangeven: vakantie, 2009, Zuid-Frankrijk, zon, Jan, Piet, Maria, Helène, strand.
Als je in Tabbled foto's wilt zien van Piet, komt deze in de rij naar voren plus alle andere met het kenmerk Piet. Geef je daarbij ook het zoekcriterium Maria op, komen enkel foto's naar voren met Maria en Piet enz.
Dus je oorspronkelijke organisatie van de foto's blijft hetzelfde.
Als dit programma verdwijnt, geen punt: ALLE foto's zijn er nog.
Picasa heeft ook oites, Photoshop ook.
Echter: zij doen het enkel met foto's, dit programma met ALLE bestanden.
Het idee van dit soort programma's is uitstekend, voor een consequent persoon.
Alles, wat belangrijk is, moet je meenemen in Tabbles. Niet vergeten.
Nadeel, als je al wat langer werkt met de PC: al het "oude" materiaal moet je nog ff doorspitten: bij mij?: goed voor een regenachtig tijd van 2 maand/20 uur per dag. Of als je een tijdje opgeborgen bent in een ziekenhuis.

Een kritische noot: 'release notes', 'version history', 'change-log', 'what's new', is belangrijk. Hoe kun je anders bepalen of je wel upgraden wilt, of misschien beter met een oudere versie af bent.
Ondanks publieke toezeggingen (link onder) kan ik ze niet vinden (kan aan mij liggen), iemand anders? :

Hm, laat ik netjes voorbijgaan. Te gevaarlijk voor mij? Als ik opruim, vind ik immers nooit meer iets terug. Dus ik hou het bij mijn persoonlijke manier van organiseren en zoeken en terugvinden...
Lijkt me anders wel een leuk 'hebbedingetje', maar vandaag andere dingen op het programma!
